“SAMBA DE GAFIEIRA EVOLVED AS A BALLROOM DANCE. I BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW THAT!”
Dieter began Latin dancing in 2009 at Brisbane’s Smooth Latin Groove to offset his hectic life working in events. Having studied music throughout his childhood, he quickly discovered a natural rhythm and connection with the music which sparked a desire to learn everything he could. He progressed from student to trainee teacher. Dieter found himself devoting every spare moment to dancing – teaching, performing and learning.
In 2009, Dieter saw a demo by Kadu Pires, Larissa Thayane and Rafael Olivera which changed the way he viewed dancing. Inspired by the energy, fluidity and dynamic between Kadu and Larissa, Dieter began taking private classes with Larissa. In 2011, he enrolled at Rio Rhythmics Latin Dance Academy, under the guidance of Larissa, Kadu and Tarcisio Teatini-Climaco.
While passionate about Brazilian zouk, Dieter has also trained in and performed salsa, samba de gafieira, cha cha cha and merengue at events including Brazil Central, Sydney Salsa Congress, Melbourne International Latin Festival, Prague Zouk Congress, as well as private and corporate functions. In 2013, he spent two months in Europe immersed in Brazilian zouk, learning from international instructors.
“If someone like me can overcome being intimidated by the dance floor, anyone can!”
– Dieter Schak
If you’re a leader, learn how to follow. If you’re a follower, learn how to lead.
Learn from the best. It’s harder to unlearn bad habits than it is to learn correct technique in the first place.
